To strengthen your connection with the Tao, designate a spiritual place in the home, i.e. a mediation room or altar. Create a sanctuary room, or an area where negativity is left outside and only happy and harmonious interactions are allowed. Prepare for 2012 by performing meaningful rituals. This can include lighting candles, burning incense, or offering flowers to express gratitude. When bathing visualize that you’re cleansing not just your body but also your mind and spirit.

The Tao opens our eyes to the beauty within the people that make up our lives. We also begin to feel the underlying interconnectedness between everyday objects that we may have taken for granted. Notice the extraordinary abilities and benefits that people and objects bring to us daily. Have you ever experienced so much happiness that for a moment your world was filled with a luminescent glow? An interpretation of this phenomenon is that you witnessed the interconnection between all things.

As we say goodbye to the Metal Rabbit and watch as the Water Dragon rises over the eastern horizon, be receptive to bringing more beauty into your life and remember to recognize, appreciate and value your relationships, both personal and inanimate. In moments of grace people and ordinary objects appear beautiful–take time in the moment to appreciate them.

Illumination through the Radiance of Fire

With a chill in the air and leaves falling from the trees, now is the time to assess the fire element in your environment. The fire element ignites ideas, expressions and transformations, and fire becomes especially important to balance out the winter season (water). The ancients understood how important it is to adjust both psychologically and physically during this cold and somber time by bringing in the color spectrum of red.

Colorful lights, glistening ornaments and candles create a festive atmosphere while treats made with spices–such as ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon–baking in the oven add warmth and fragrance to our homes. The image of intimate conversations around a glowing fireplace comes to mind. This is also a great time to display nostalgic photos and mementos or art pieces that make you smile. Arranging items in groups of three or singular objects in the shape of triangles, i.e. a Christmas tree, are also favored.

It’s a great time to ask yourself what brings you joy and laughter. Choose games to play that bring fun into the home. This will ensure that you don’t become lethargic, isolated or depressed. Laughter and singing are positive attributes of the fire element and bring happiness and expression to an otherwise dark and gloomy time.

Changing Blocked Progress to Liberating Action

The nature of water is a key ingredient in understanding Feng Shui. It’s one of the two elements that the ancient Chinese scholars would use to explain how an unforeseen force (wind) could affect the tangible world (water). Literally translated, feng shui is “wind over water.” As they observed wind creating a rippling motion over the surface of water, they understood there’s more to life than what meets the eye.

When there is too little water in our environment energy can become stagnant–our reservoir of ideas can run dry. When you wish to accomplish a goal, especially on a creative project, it can be very helpful to increase the element of water in your environment.

Water creates liberating action. When progress is blocked and you need a breakthrough, it is important to increase the water element by incorporating black, blue or wavy patterns into your surroundings. If possible, go to a beach, lake or river and let the water’s movement inspire you on to the next action of your project. Fountains or images of water in nature will also do the trick. Water’s parent element is metal, so you can also utilize the color white, mirrors, reflective objects or round shapes.
